June 6, 2025 – Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Police Department has identified the officer involved in a recent fatal shooting in the Olympic Division as Officer III Andres Martinez (Serial No. 41620). The shooting occurred on the night of June 3, 2025, following reports of gunfire at an apartment complex on the 1000 block of Ardmore Avenue in the Koreatown area.
Around 10:00 p.m., officers from the Olympic Patrol Division responded to a call reporting an Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW). According to preliminary details, as officers approached the scene, 35-year-old Ronald Gainer Jr. emerged from an apartment carrying a firearm. Gunfire was exchanged, and Gainer was struck by police. He retreated into the apartment but was soon taken into custody without further resistance.
Gainer was transported by the Los Angeles Fire Department to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators have since determined that earlier that evening, Gainer had been involved in a domestic violence incident with his girlfriend, who fled the residence. He reportedly fired shots into the air and toward another unit in the complex, which led to the 911 call.
No officers or bystanders were harmed during the incident. At the scene, officers recovered a black Smith & Wesson M&P .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun, along with spent casings and empty magazines. Another firearm and additional ammunition were found inside the apartment.
The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is leading the inquiry, working in coordination with the California Department of Justice under the authority of Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates independent investigations into police shootings that result in civilian deaths.
Gainer’s family has been formally notified by LAPD’s Family Liaison Section.
